The Strangest Superheroes of All! – Marvel Crisis Protocol

Back at it again! And with the Space Station Zero run that me and Kinpatsusamurai were doing all finished up for now, and while we get ready for another run, we’re dabbling in some Marcel Crisis Protocol. After painting up that last batch, I got together with Kinpatsusamurai and we took on the Unstoppable Colossus scenario from the Atomic Mass Games page. The idea of this scenario is that Colossus has taken on the power of Cyttorak and the Unstoppable Juggernaut (thus the fancy helmet and the title), and the allied heroes have to contain him using psychic Cerebro towers before he breaks loose and becomes…well, unstoppable.

The scenario is free to download and I’d also picked up a hard copy of the expansion that was done as a kit for game stores, so we felt pretty well-equipped going into this – except we realized to our horror after the scenario started that we were going to have to dish out a lot of attacks to take Colossus down, since the damage doesn’t stick and since for all intents and purposes it’s a race against the clock while he takes down the Cerebro Towers that we set up as part of the scenario.

There were plenty of mistakes made, but also plenty of standouts in this. Poor Cyclops ended up taking a pretty solid beating, but that’s half of his job on my X-Men squad, and Emma Frost ended up being a pretty fun, flexible, and effective off-tank as well. Normally we’d have been in great shape because of the sheer number of effects that the X-Men characters I bring can throw down onto opponents – but Colossus in this scenario is immune to a whole lot of status effects and also can’t be moved by other characters. Thematically, it fits brilliantly – but it made this a very challenging and uphill fight. Fortunately, my X-Men weren’t fighting alone, as Kinpatsusamurai brought a fun mix of Asgardians and special agents under the Avengers (or maybe A-Force?) umbrella.

In the end, we lost the Cerebro towers and, alas, lost the game – but we’re already planning a rematch with this scenario, and we have a couple of others planned down the road to cut our teeth on a little more. On top of that, I’m hoping to get a few more skirmishes in between other MCP squads – I’m definitely getting more comfortable with the MCP mechanics and ruleset, and the way that the “power” tokens stack, and how to play the resource-management game with that, but I think I’ll still need a lot of practice to get to the point where I’m as steady with this as 40K – and I’m not even all that steady with that!
