“There is great strength to be drawn from spite.” – More Guardian Defenders

The above quote is something I pulled from the Unification mod of Dawn of War, which remains a game I have a borderline unhealthy fixation left. I’m not sure offhand if the quote was itself lifted from another Warhammer 40K or Dawn of War sequel game, but it’s one that has gotten itself pretty intertwined with my understanding of the Aeldari. Sometimes it’s also something I found myself drawing on in my personal life, which has recently been a little all over the place, until recognizing recently that there are limits to how far spite can carry a person. It’s been a transformative few months for me, but good ones I think, but I’m back at it and painting again.

Speaking of which – these are the longest-running squad of Guardians I think I’ve ever painted. Thinking about it I must have started them in late April or early May and found myself just painting them up in very small bits and pieces of work from that point straight through to right around the present. I followed my usual Eldar formula which is a cross between a traditional Ulthwe paint scheme and the Shrine of the Ebon Blade from an old codex, and I feel pretty good about the results – and confident that after getting a whole batch of the lads done that I’m back in the saddle.

Unsurprisingly, in keeping with my Dawn of War and Unification-specific fixation, I went with these being a squad of Guardians-turned-Dire Avengers, in part because I like the aesthetic but also because this way I have the flexibility of being able to field them as either as long as I can distinguish them easily enough from other Guardian Defenders, Storm Guardians, Dire Avengers, or other units. This is also the first time that instead of magnetizing the weapon’s “turret” base that I’ve gone with a pressure fit approach so that it can swivel better. Time will tell if I made the right call on that or not!
