Salmarin, Wraithlord Cryptid

Last, but certainly not least in my army, is an optional Wraithlord I have called Salmarin, but who I have also nicknamed “the Sasquatch” for reasons that are entirely sentimental. This is a rescue project even more than usual, since I ended up assembling this guy almost entirely from bits lots – some came from the lot I was given last year after a friend cleared out their garage, some were spare bit lots from Ebay, and last was an armless Wraithlord torso and leg set that I stumbled on being sold at clearance second-hand. The centerpiece of the build is definitely an old metal Neurothrope head – I probably wouldn’t have done this or been able to pull it off well without that, so I feel very lucky that I had a hold of that going into this.

I was surprised by how quickly this came together – unlike the Wave Serpent and weapon platforms which each felt like they took a prolonged period to complete, Salmarin came together in just over a day once I had him primed. Part of that was that he was the last piece of the larger army and I wanted to be able to call the project done, but I think legitimately Wraithlords are just a nice model to work with. The basing and paint were largely the same as everything else in my army but I tried to spend a little more time on “chitin”-like bits and in giving Salmarin some neon-pink venting, along with the usual neon-pink tufts.

This isn’t a model I’ll probably get to use a whole lot – largely, it’s there as a spare option if there’s no chaff for Shadow Weavers and if bringing the D-Cannons would be impractical. That said, I think like the Wave Serpent he also works nicely as a sort of standout piece visually that elevates the rest of the army. There’s a part of me that wants to try and get a hold of more Wraithlords and more Neurothrope heads and do up a trio, but I also know that I went into this project with a goal to fulfill and now it’s achieved. For the moment I think I’m going to call this new army comfortably done, unless something drastic changes either in the meta, in the amount of spare time I have, or my wallet in the near future.

Thanks for coming along to meet my new weird elves – I daresay I think I’ve found my “forever” army. I’m looking forward to getting more games with them in, whether in 10th Edition, old 9th Edition, or One Page Rules. And after a whole lot of work on Warhammer, there’s a lot of other painting subjects that I’m looking forward to being able to show off and other projects that I’m looking forward to jumping into from here, as time allows. Will my losing streak end anytime soon? I guess that part remains to be seen, but I think if nothing else this project will mark improvement for me as both a player and painter, and those are both things that I can be proud of.
