This one is a bit of a double feature of a couple of one-off projects for my long-neglected Death Guard. (There’s something about painting Nurglings again that never fails to soothe the soul.) Over the summer, Midgard Gaming in Mount Pearl had an all-day paint jam as part of their Warhammer Day event. I was lucky enough to get a 1000 pt. game of 10th edition in with an old friend, but also brought a couple models along for the ride that I wanted to try and get off of the shame pile. I’m happy with the results, and I got to enter the Tallyman into the contest, but also on completion of the vehicle piece entered it into Dave Stone’s Season of Scenery contest.

Given that my work for the last four year has directly involved income taxes, the Tallyman felt like a natural pick for a Death Guard model I was going to have to add to my army at some point. I like that this is just a model that’s packed with little details and flavor, from the abacus that he’s carrying via tentacle to the scroll, to the plasma pistol, to the tiny Nurgling carrying yet more scrolls. I also kind of like the hooked “microphone” piece on top, and especially once I applied my usual Death Guard metallics formula with Screaming Bell, Hashut Copper, and Nihilakh Oxide, I found this was a really nice standout detail on the model.

Everything came together nicely on this guy, though I will say that painting a model start to finish in a day (minus four hours for a game of 10th) and trying to have it up to snuff as a display piece was a lot more of a “crunch” challenge than I anticipated it being. On one hand, the way that I do sponging on some of the early coats and metallics helped speed things along in the early stages, but I was definitely sweating a little by the time I started to get to the highlighting stages. Finished with a few hours to spare, though, and it was definitely a fun experience where I got to meet a lot of other local painters.

While paint on the Tallyman was drying, I started sponge coats and metallics on this old beast of a model, which Kinpatsusamurai got me last Christmas, and which has basically been sitting on the shame pile since. Since this and the Tallyman were the only Death Guard stuff I had in the paint queue I decided they were getting cleared at the same time. I’m not entirely sure what this one is! I think if I ever use it in a casual game it’ll be to proxy a Rhino, but since selling off some of my other terrain pieces earlier in the year I think it’s going to see even more action as a line-of-sight-blocking piece for upcoming games. I’ve got a few “ruins” pieces but it’ll be useful to have some real, blocky pieces that I can throw onto the table too. Very happy with how this one turned out, too!
