Nightmare Hulks and Nightmare Fuel – Gellerpox Infected

Like the Mutoid Vermin I posted last week, these were sitting on my pile of shame forever. It was hard to get motivated to paint them once they were added to Legends, but with getting more into generic sci-fi miniature agnostic games like Space Station Zero, I really wanted to have a few options and these really fit the bill. Not only that, but even if the bases are a little small, the Nightmare Hulks in particular and Vulgar the Thrice-Cursed are about the right size for Chaos Spawn, and I’d love to be able to run them with my Death Guard as such.

These actually felt a lot easier to tackle than doing the Mutoid Vermin since they all more or less just had one color scheme – some of them got base-coated in fleshy colors with metal secondary colors, some of them got base-coated in metallics and had fleshy colors added after, and if anything this kind of just turned into an art study or practice of me tackling my usual fleshy, gross, Nurgly recipes. I also tried to use a little more in the ways of purples and yellow effectively as a highlight and I’m happy with the results across all of these.

Since the painting part was more or less what I’ve done with previous gross, fleshy Nurgle models, what I really want to ramble about here are just the sculpts. GW has been killing it with sculpts the last few years and as far as Nurgle stuff goes these are no exception. I like just how distinct and divergent and how much personality each of the individual Nightmare Hulks seem to have – one is a sort of butcher, one’s an angler, and one is some kind of…brawler, or brute-type maybe? They’re all different, but still all very Nurgle, and what you might expect to emerge out of some kind of contaminated long-haul transport.

My verdict on this is that I put them off for way too long, because I had a lot of fun with these when I finally got around to them. If I were to change anything in the future I might reverse the reds and greens in the color schemes, on some of the models, but that’ll be something to weigh if I ever come back to these or paint another set of these. For the moment, I’m happy, and they’re definitely going to be making tabletop appearances soon – whether in 40K or in some other, weirder capacity.

These look awesome Mick, shame they have been carted off to the legends list, but I think you have really captured the mass and putridness of these models perfectly.
