Around these parts, we all know that I like me some Dawn of War. Naturally, when I discovered the TTCombat Space Elf Stargates, an MDF build of three totally-not Webway Gates plus barricades, I had to get my hands on them. The cost couldn’t be beat, and they were a breeze to put together. I wanted to try and do these as budget pieces since the starting cost was so low anyways, and so what I added to these ended up being pretty minimalist, though I’m still very happy with how they turned out. Can’t beat Dollarama.

First, for basing, rather than having each of the webways stand on their own, I wanted to add some kind of basing beneath them. Rather than ordering resin bases, where a 100mm base probably would have cost as much as the gates themselves, I went for the budget option of wooden circles at my local dollar store. I added some of my usual basing sand and some rocks from the driveway, using the rocks to mark off Webway Gates 1, 2 and 3 in case I end up using them as objective markers in future games.

The real crown jewel of this build, if you’ll pardon the pun, was the little dollar-store gems that I picked up en masse and then dug through to get enough identical gems in order to decorate the Webway. Usually I’d paint on or LED-ify bright lights or big focus areas on my terrain but I thought this would be a quick, cheap, and fun alternative – and they still look pretty swell on the table, since me and Kinpatsusamurai have already gotten some use out of these. These were a fun, quick build, they worked great with my established Ulthwe scheme and sponge-brushing, and the price for a piece of Dawn of War nostalgia really can’t be beat.

For cheap scenery they look very effective, and the gems work well, as does using the rocks to number them.

Thanks! And yeah, I was thrilled with how well the gems looked in practice once I slapped them on, lol.
