“Sanity is for the weak!” – Chaos Space Marines

Another treat in the Oldhammer haul was a bunch of (very) old Chaos Space Marines, if I’m not mistaken the first batch of plastic sculpts done for those models. These ones definitely show their age more than the Khorne Berzerkers but there’s a charm to these models that I love all the same. I mixed in a few extra bits and a Berzerker to serve as a “Sergeant” unit for this group, but otherwise I tried to focus on repainting and repurposing a bunch of now twice-loved gunline models.

These got largely the same treatment painting that the Khorne Berzerkers did, and I’m still quite pleased with the results. It was around this point that I also started to run low on fancy skull bases, though, so I got myself some Kromlech basing stones, some individual plastic skulls from Green Stuff World and the Citadel Skulls box, and I improvised. It’s a good thing that these won’t be used for any big formal fancy games, since I opted in part out of necessity to equip them with a mix of pistols and bolters that would probably make them difficult to run in any official capacity now, but I still like these dudes a lot.

These and the Khorne Berzerkers largely complete the footslogging, infantry portion of this army and they were definitely the most time-consuming part of completing it. By the end, though, I feel like I hit a good sweet spot or balance between time investment and detail that makes them an army I’m happy to show off. I’d be lying if I said there weren’t points I was getting sick of painting just red and gold, but I have more projects ahead where I’ll get to play with a fun, weird new palette. Sometimes we just gotta eat our vegetables before we can get to the good stuff.

One more Chaos batch ahead!

Fantastic work Mick, and those old sculpts had a charm about them, and also great as parts to mix with the Khorne berserker sprues as well.
