“Vile Eldar approach. Destroy them!” – Chaos Space Marine Bikers

The cavalry have arrived, to deal with the pointy-eared nuisances I’m going to be introducing on the blog soon. I’d say these are Oldhammer, and the Juggernaut certainly falls under that umbrella, but it was with some surprise that I learned that the Chaos bikers are still a relatively current sculpt. They needed a lot of TLC to get them to a point where they were playable, but I’m very happy with the end results. I ordered a few oval bases to get them “street legal,” though I chose with the Juggernaut to just go with a thicker resin base that I had because I wanted to make sure that it could support the weight of this thing. I’ve worked with lots of pewter before, like my Wraithlord refit, but I think by volume this is probably the heaviest, chunkiest one I’ve worked on yet.

For these, I largely followed the same paint scheme that I did on the rest of the World Eaters infantry, but I tried a little more sponging on the Juggernaut just to mix up some of the textures, and tried to apply a little of this to the bikes as well, though a little more subtly. The Juggernaut was a joy to work on, in no small part because of how much I like the charm of the older, goofier-looking models, but also the simpler models just feel so much less like “work” to finish. The resin base for the Juggernaut was from Kromlech, and I think the stones on the oval bases just ended up being from the driveway, which is my go-to when the Kromlech resin basing kits don’t quite work.

I had to go a little lighter on the skulls with these, just because by this point I was starting to run low and had to budget skulls for other projects, but I think I still hit enough of a balance that these look nice and Khorne-ish. I do want to say for the record that out of all the paints that I’ve used on this project, Retributor Gold has put in some serious work – it was always a paint that I kind of neglected or didn’t get the hype on, but after working with it at length for this project I can see why a lot of others swear on it, or why it can be a real staple paint colour. I feel like on the Juggernaut it was especially key.

And that’s all that’s going into the World Eaters demo army, at least for now. I’ve yet to get a game in with these, but when I do, I’ll likely post a pic or two here or over on my Instagram. My goal is to debut them at this year’s Atlanti-Con in the fall in Corner Brook, where the army’s previous owner has offered to demo them with me for the game room in a fun, full-circle kind of way. This was a really rewarding, unique project to work on and I’m looking forward to that game.
