Helbrute, Back in Action!

When you’re reading this, the 30th annual Sandbox Gaming charity marathon is about to get into swing, and when I’m not at work over the next couple days I’ll be onsite helping with some of the tech stuff! So far as being involved in more stuff in real-life goes, though, this Helbrute facelift felt like something I wanted to share, too, since it got to be front and center at one of the game demos that I did at a recent convention, and since I just really like how the big guy turned out. I had painted this before as a bigass Nurgling-turned-Helbrute but I have lots of bigger models for my Death Guard and the World Eaters were in desperate need of their own chunky model.

Pictured: The Helbrute (left), and the Obliterators he’s taking over for as the army’s Chonk (right).

I wanted to make sure that this fit largely with the rest of the World Eaters army, so I followed more or less the same painting scheme for them that I’ve detailed here. I also didn’t have a ton of time to get this done before going to Atlanti-Con, where I got to demo One Page Rules with a very cool dude. Brent, who has been a friend of mine for over a decade, is the one who indirectly got me started doing the demos and painting tutorials that I do in person now, and he did this with a simple question: “Hey, I was cleaning out my parents’ garage and found some Warhammer stuff, do you have space for a few spare books?” Needless to say the box was bigger than I anticipated and had a lot more than just a few books. The Berzerkers and Chaos Marines that came out of that box have gone a long way and have helped some new painters experiment or find their footing and it’s a gift I intend to keep paying forward.

I’m very happy with the end result on this one even if it was a bit of a speed-project, and I have some fun new plans for Chaos going into the new year, though this will probably be the last Khorne piece for a while unless I decide to nab an old Daemon Prince at some point. As nice as the new sculpt is, there’s a magic in the old Daemon Princes that speaks to me, especially given my fondness for the Dawn of War series and Oldhammer. I’m hoping to give Death Guard a bit of a comeback here, though, and if I get real ambitious I might delve a little into Slaanesh (not a euphemism!). We’ll see how it goes from here, but I think I can happily call the Khorne demo army done for now in the meantime!

One last friendly reminder – the Sandbox Gaming marathon is underway, and your support and/or views would be greatly appreciated! Me and the gang and the local charities we support thank you heartily.

Excellent work on the Hellbrute Mick, not a fan of the model, as I always preferred the old metal and Forgeworld Dreadnoughts, ended up using mine as a demonically possessed dreadnought ! LOL
