Techmarine Martellus – He’s an engineer, he solves problems.

You’d be forgiven for thinking, after that test batch of Blood Ravens I’d painted about a year ago, that I’d forgotten about or given up on their project. With all of the recent Dawn of War hype, though, with the classic series getting a fourth game, a tabletop release, and a whole remaster, I knew I was going to have to revisit this, if only for my own nostalgia and to have a new faction for my space elves to bully. Conveniently, this also comes at a time when a local friend with the non-profit I work with is getting me into Kill Team, so I might be able to keep a painted force small instead of having to spring for a whole army! In theory, anyways…

Dreadnoughts are in with 10th edition, and make a mess of the tabletop, so naturally a Techmarine at some point is going to be an auto-include – also, when I managed a while back to get a hold of an Iron Father Feirros miniature second-hand I had a feeling he was going to be a perfect fit for this ragtag heretical army. The model has a lot of personality and unapologetically takes up a lot of space. I love the shoulder-mounted heavy bolter, and love just how imposing the Feirros sculpt is – if anything, this model makes the 40mm base it’s on look miniscule.

I switched up my painting formula just a little for this run, and I decided to go with a cleaner armor look than I did with the last batch that I painted. I’ve also wanted for ages to work things like barb wire into my model basing so this was a really good opportunity to play with that as well. Most of the rest of this was in line with how I painted the test batch, and conveniently, completely coincidentally, how I paint my Khorne Berzerkers – obviously a coincidence, which has nothing to do with the abundance of blood and skulls that I’ve applied to all the basing for this new fighting force.

Overall, happy with how this turned out. Mounted him on an old resin base, followed my recipes, and capped things off with the Forgotten Chapters decals for the Blood Ravens chapter, and I think now at some point I’m going to have to build him a dreadnought buddy. In the words of the immortal Bob Ross, everybody needs a friend. Even heretics faithful, Emperor-fearing loyalists. But next up is something a little more rank-and-file, for those Kill Team games I mentioned!
