“…what are YOU doing in my swamp?” – Great Unclean One (Proxy)

Well, I think we’ve discovered the source of all of the chaos in our ogre friend’s swamp! About a year ago, god love him, @kinpatsusamurai printed me an enormous Great Unclean One proxy. Nurglings have always been my favorite part of painting Death Guard, and so the opportunity to paint what is functionally a giant Nurgling was a unique and fun challenge. Because they’re small and don’t take up a lot of surface area there’s not a lot of detail to throw onto Nurglings, so having to tackle a Nurgling-like creature on a larger scale was certainly a switch-up. I had to take my time a lot more with the details on this big guy, including the archetypal shapely Nurgling butt, exposed bone bits like on the back of the neck and a fat deposit on the underside of the arm, and of course the weapons. And I got to paint some Nurglings too – but since I was already painting a big one, I wanted to diversify them a little visually so I finally tried painting a purple-pink Nurgling just to mix things up. In hindsight, I probably should have used lighter, fleshier pinks, but I’m still pretty happy with the end result.

Pictured: The big guy, with one of the little purple Nurglings in question.

In addition to the usual colors, with plenty of Death Guard Green and Ogryn Camo with Athonian Camoshade as a wash, I also got plenty of use out of Bugman’s Glow, Rakarth Flesh and Reikland Fleshshade over the exposed tissue and muscles. Sponging went a long way with the metallics on the sword but I also highlighted the skulls individually. As always, anywhere there was copper got a generous helping of Nihilakh Oxide, and I find it really elevates any aged copper look.

It’s a big Nurgling – I’m not sure I have anything else that I can really add to that! I did it as part of the swamp batch because I needed an excuse to wrangle it into a project and paint it up, and the shame pile is about a pound of plastic lighter now. I’m happy with how it came together and it was a good “study” model in terms of doing raised flesh, musculature, things like that. Soon, with any luck, the residents of the ogre’s swamp will band together and kick out the interloping Daemon, and things can finally start to get back to normal around here.

After this, one more entry from my Demonweb set and then (pending a little free time to edit some video stuff) I can show off the swamp terrain I’ve made! Stay tuned!

A great rendition of a Great Unclean one, or a really, really really bloated Nurgling ! LOL Great use of the different greens, gives the skin a very putrid and unhealthy look full of pestillence.
