“The wanderers have returned.” – More Eldar Rangers

It’s been a while, hasn’t it? One thing that hasn’t changed, though, is how much I love old pewter models in my Warhammer armies. I finished the new, fancy plastic Rangers not all that long ago and decided on a whim that I wanted to add a second squad of these – I was hoping to add another troop choice, not that troop choice works quite the same any more now that tenth edition is here. And while the Rangers might be old, the lightbox set up is new – I picked up a slightly smaller setup with warm and cool lights together and fabric backdrops, and I’m hoping it’s a step up from what I was using before. The plastic sheen of the ABS backing was really starting to get to me.

I had a lot of fun with these, especially the cloaks, and I think they fit in really nicely with the other batch. As usually AV / Vallejo shifter paints from the Space Dust set put in most of the work on the cloaks, with a green-to-purple base that became blue-to-purple on edges. I also mixed up the colors for the holsters and leather parts out of necessity, but after seeing the results I might keep the new mix going forward – normally I use Vallejo’s Flat Earth and then just add Buff to taste, but after playing a little with Skrag Brown, washes, and a little bit of Ushabti bone as an option I think I’ve got something that stands out better from the Ulthwe bone tones.

I’ve definitely been through a nostalgic, pewter phase over the last while and I think these were solid models to kick that off. I’m also looking forward to fielding a couple squads of Rangers regularly in larger tenth edition games, though I don’t know if they’ll quite make the cut into the 1,000 point base army I’m making since Shroud Runners are such a good alternative and Wraithguard are starting to look more like an auto-include. As the edition goes on, we’ll have to see how this all plays out, but I’m sure I’ll find a place for this batch. More metal models to come, and I’m gonna try and post some other fun games and stuff I’ve been up to lately soon!
