The Vengeful Son(s) – Jensus vs. Jensus

This satisfies the requirement for an HQ/leader unit for my Blood Ravens army, technically, but my reasoning here is a little more self-indulgent than that even. In the long campaign I’ve run with BrittneyStucklessArt, Blood Raven/Deathwatch Librarians are something of a constant thorn in the side of the protagonists, and Jensus Natorian is one that we stole borrowed from the canon lore and gave a place of distinction in our story. Jensus is a figure who was originally produced as part of a larger Deathwatch Kill Team set with some really interesting and distinctive miniatures from other chapters, and I thought it would be fun to revisit him in Primaris form.

After getting a hold of the miniatures for this project, both second hand, and paint stripping them, I decided I was going to go with a Deathwatch paint scheme that largely mimicked the black that I did for my dad’s Black Templars army by leaning into dark colors drybrushed with Thunderhawk Blue and highlighted with Russ Grey. The rest is mostly just a run-of-the-mill blend of Zandri Dust, Ushabti Bone, and Screaming Skull blended in different quantities with Agrax Earthshade, and some reds thrown in for the blood effects on the old Jensus’ sculpted tabard and “blood” symbol. I decided since he was fancy, he was also getting a golden Reiver mask in his Primaris form and did some fancy, fiery power swords for both.

As one last little touch, I had some more of the resin ravens left over from Green Stuff World so I added a couple to the Primaris version of Jensus since I felt like he had a little more empty space to work with, making him my second Blood Raven Disney Princess. Longtime readers will know I love having little dudes in my armies – genestealer familiars, nurglings, etc. – and this scratches that itch thoroughly. I’m thinking if and when I get around to the dreadnought I’ll have to do something clever on that front, but one project at a time.

Pictured: Another Blood Raven with an actual raven. I’m starting something, here, I think.

Very happy in the end with how both of these turned out. Initially I was sure I was going to like the Primaris version better on completion but having painted both, now, there’s something magical about the custom original sculpt that can’t really be captured or translated easier. The Primaris one will probably see more table time with my Phobos-themed force, but the old one has grown on me. Also pretty content with how the power swords turned out, though for all my practice on molten effects in the past I still don’t think I’m ready by a long shot for anything like an Avatar of Khaine. Someday I’ll get there.
