In Defense of DIY #3 – Tyranid-Themed Scatter Terrain

This is a shorter, sillier DIY terrain project that I completed because I got some Easter supplies on clearance, but also because I’m a sucker for Tyranid terrain. Recently there was a Kill Team box of scatter terrain that hit shelves for about $80, but in a year where I have to be a lot more budget-conscious I decided I was going to have to be more inventive. (These also made a great delivery method for Easter presents when I visited BrittneyStucklessArt earlier this year!) I can also only take so much credit for this one myself, because I was heavily inspired by the Tyranid terrain tutorials on Wild Boar Blog’s page here.

This was a short, sweet project that only took me a couple days and very cheap on supplies – lots of plastic easter eggs, and lots of hot glue gun ammo sticks. I used the glue gun to layer veins and growths over the eggs themselves, and once that was done, I simply sponge-painted on a black-to-white gradient and then went over the works after with a thin, transparent layer of Pro-Acryl blue. The nice thing is that the eggs still have a little give and flexibility, even after being varnished, so they’ll still open and close which gives a few more options on how to set them up on your board.

This one didn’t take as long as some of the previous projects and wasn’t quite as involved but it was fun! I’d definitely recommend this for Tyranid players and would even moreso recommend checking out Wild Boar Blog’s full post on how they did theirs. I might have to revisit it to try and do some of the spawning pools or pits and elevated terrain that they built up in the future.

Thanks! I found that too, and that’s kind of the lane I want to move into with my terrain stuff. (with maybe the occasional fancy piece, lol.) Also, ProAcryl transparents put in a lot of work on this one.
